When To Prune Crepe Myrtles

Pruning Crepe Myrtles Will Maximize Flowering and Enhance the Shape of the Tree

Blooms occur on the tips of new growth so pruning allows more new growth and thus, more flowers!

So, when do you prune?

For best results, we recommend pruning in the late winter. This will stimulate new branch growth and give the tree enough time for these new growths to become established.

How much to prune?

You want to be careful to not over prune your crepe myrtles. It can cause too much new growth that will be weak and overcrowded. We typically recommend trimming a bit off of the top and sides to maintain the general shape. You should also try to keep some space between the branches and trim any that are crossed over each other. This will allow more airflow and help prevent bacteria from forming.

Of course if any branches look dead you will want to trim those off as well.

Do we offer trimming services?

Unfortunately we do not trim the trees ourselves but we have a few referrals who can help and we’re always available to make recommendations if you want to trim on your own! We just focus on healthcare treatments for the landscape like fertilizing, general pest and disease control, and deep root feeding.
