Brown Rot is One of Many Fungal Diseases That Impacts Stone Fruit Trees

How do you know if your trees have this disease?

The most commonly and severely impacted trees will be almond, apricot, nectarine, and peach. The first signs will be browning and withering of the blossoms. These affected blossoms will also stay attached to the twig for some time. Then you will also notice cankers (open sores) along the twigs and leaves will start to die off as well. The telltale sign of brown rot will be the grey-ish tan spores and oozing sap that appear as the infection sets in. As the tree begins to fruit you will see the rot infect the fruit as well.

What can be done?

We offer a set of sprays to be done right before peak growth season. We spray the branches of the tree with a fungicide to help kill off the spores. We do one spray right at bud swell and another right before petal fall to ensure best protection.

If we have a particularly rainy season that tends to make the spread of brown rot and other fungal diseases worse as they thrive in cool, wet conditions. The good news is the disease will typically die off in summer as it cannot survive in the heat.
